June Is the Month For Men to Consider Their Health

June is Men’s Health Month, a yearly reminder and annual encouragement for men to take care of themselves and be on the lookout for common challenges to their wellbeing. It seeks “… to raise awareness about health care for men and focus on encouraging boys, men and their families to practice and implement healthy living decisions, such as exercising and eating healthy.”

One area of emphasis is always cardiovascular disease (CVD), which also ties into hearing health. The relationship between heart disease and hearing loss is not causal, but a poorly performing circulatory system will often negatively impact the auditory system.

As the American Academy of Audiology explains on its webpage: “The ear is supplied by several small arteries and requires a sufficient and rich blood flow to maintain proper function. It is believed that CVD can reduce blood flow to the ear and in turn cause damage to different parts of the auditory system. This damage typically results in a sensorineural hearing loss which is permanent and often managed with amplification.”

Amplification of course means hearing aids, so finding affordable hearing aids might be on a man’s agenda if he does not get a handle on other aspects of his health. For example, men develop diabetes at a rate slightly higher than women, and having the condition doubles the incidence of hearing loss issues.

Certain jobs can also take a cumulative toll on hearing, like factory work, construction, and serving in the military.

So this June, men should commit to better health and follow up on any lingering health-related issues—such as getting their hearing tested—which they can do at a local hearing aid provider like Southern Tier Audiology.
